Self-Assessment Guide (SAG)

The Self-Assessment Guide is a tool provided by TESDA to help applicants evaluate their readiness for the course. It covers various competencies, including:

  • Maintaining housing, farm implements, and surrounding areas
  • Providing forage
  • Performing breeding of ruminants
  • Raising dairy animals
  • Raising meat-type animals

A TESDA-issued document that lists the competencies or tasks required for a specific course (e.g., Animal Production (Ruminants) NC II).

  • It allows aspiring trainees to rate themselves on whether they can perform each competency.
  • It’s often included in the enrollment packet and may be used during pre-assessment or screening.
  • Purpose: Helps students understand course expectations and assess their current skill level.
  • Format: A checklist of competencies with “Yes” or “No” options for self-evaluation.

What’s Included in the Self-Assessment Guide (SAG)

1. Maintain Housing, Farm Implements, and Surrounding Areas

  • Preparation and maintenance of animal housing according to established farm procedures.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing animal housing and surrounding areas.
  • Routine maintenance of farm implements and facilities.

2. Provide Forage

  • Identification and selection of appropriate forage species for ruminants.
  • Harvesting, handling, and storing forage properly.
  • Feeding forage to ruminants following recommended practices.

3. Perform Breeding of Ruminants

  • Identification of signs of estrus in ruminants.
  • Assisting in natural mating or artificial insemination procedures.
  • Maintenance of accurate breeding records.

4. Raise Dairy Animals

  • Performing milking procedures hygienically.
  • Monitoring and addressing common health issues in dairy animals.

5. Raise Meat-Type Animals

  • Selection and raising of ruminants for meat production.
  • Implementation of feeding programs for optimal growth.
  • Preparation of animals for market or slaughter according to standards.

Each section in the SAG presents specific tasks and asks the trainee to assess their ability to perform them, typically by answering "Yes" or "No" to questions like:

  • Can I prepare tools and materials according to work requirements?
  • Can I feed animals according to prescribed feeding systems?
  • Can I maintain and submit dairy production records and sales reports to the appropriate authority?

This self-assessment helps identify areas where further training may be needed and ensures that trainees are prepared for both the theoretical and practical components of the course.
